Poppy is a surrendered,11 year old, umbrella cockatoo. It may be hard to understand but I sincerely believe that these surrendered birds grieve. Cockatoos are such sweet birds it is possibly more obvious that they are grieving than in other birds.
After having him for two weeks,I became increasingly concerned that Poppy didn’t seem to be eating properly. To the rescue comes volunteers, Melody, Bobby and Ramsey. the following is her note from last night.

Hi Jean and Jim,
Well, Poppy ate some tonight, Bobby held him all evening, and we put him in his cage for the night and covered him up. Bobby made a new perch big enough for his huge feet (not that he’s using it, he’s clinging to the side of the cage and working on the door).
The big news is that Poppy can talk. He says “Here, Poppy” and another time it sounded like “I love you” which wouldn’t surprise me. And, of course, gobble, gobble, gobble…
You should have seen Bobby’s face when I got Poppy out of the truck, I haven’t seen him react like that in years. He is going to like being a temporary foster parent. I asked him to teach Poppy to limp on command to pull in the big bucks. 😉
Ramsey wrote a little piece on Poppy and the Sanctuary to post on his Facebook page to get his extended family and his friends to vote for us.
