I understand how devastated Greg/Broken Wing is. Mindless acts of violence make us all feel vulnerable. I try to make a balancing act of being open to new people visiting BLS but cautious about who does what. I have been warned many times about volunteers that steal or harm birds. How can you tell who is a threat?
Some years ago I met a charming woman that I would come to absolutely trust. Her aviary, when I finally saw it, was a rat infested dump. I am still very emotional about her betrayal and the harm she did to the birds. Now I check things out much sooner and more closely. Fort Worth Zoo is my primary referral source. And the people from Animal Control have been here when I have donated cages to them, after a large seizure of abused birds. The sheriff is a friend. My goal is to be exemplary. It is the least I can do for God’s creatures. And to that end I better get to work getting bird poop off my stained concrete floors!!
