Dear Avian Enthusiast

I am writing to you again on behalf of the Kaytee Avian Foundation (KAF). We are excited about the KAF Parrot Relinquishment Study (KPRS), a project of the Kaytee Avian Foundation. We appreciate your taking the time to take part and hope you will encourage others to do so as well.

Our primary goal is to understand why companion parrots are relinquished and what we might be able to do to help these birds remain in their homes. Hopefully this information will help us to improve the quality of life and life expectancies of companion parrots and to enhance the bond between them and their caregivers.

There is a widespread perception that the problem of parrot relinquishment is escalating. However without definitive data we cannot establish and document such a trend. All respondents will be provided a report on these findings and the results will be published and available to all interested parties.

It will be very helpful to have your records available prior to starting the survey. These would include the numbers and species of parrots taken in by your organization within the last 12 months, the numbers and types rehomed, adopted or placed within the last 12 months and the numbers and types currently in your possession. Another part of the survey that is very important is the reasons for relinquishment. We are hoping to establish this information for each type of parrot as the reasons appear to differ greatly by group or species.
Due to the intensity of the survey and time commitment it requires you may start and save your entries at any point and return to it for completion.

We encourage you to share (cross post) this survey with any appropriate entity whether it is a parrot welfare organization, rescue, sanctuary, rehabilitation, adoption/rehoming organization, foster home, or mainstream animal shelter. We also want to reach out to and include breeders, zoos, veterinarians and other concerned individuals who take in, or are asked to provide care for relinquished parrots.

Upon submission of your survey your organization or the organization you are affiliated with will be entered in a sweepstakes in which 20 winners will receive Kaytee products, a $1500 retail value. Be sure to include your e-mail address and contact information for entry into the sweepstakes. We look forward to your participation and support.
