This facility is a 501C3 charitable organization that provides the ultimate care for young, old, sick or injured raptors, hawks and owls. They supported financially by donations and staff by large part, volunteers. They are worthy.
I am a subpermitee with this magnificent facility and it’s professional, caring staff. What that means is that as a former “permit” holder the State of Texas and the US Fish and Wildlife granted me permission to handle, house, treat and release wild birds. There is a very specific criterial that must be met, and approved of, by both government agencies. It is a misnomer that people are “licensed” to rehab wild animals. Rehabbers are granted a permit and it can be taken away at any time. There is no pay or any compensation or any form of assistance. There are substantial educational requirement. When I was no longer able to meet the facility requirements, I approached Blackland Prairie Raptor Center to work with them under their permit, limited to very specific activities and accountable to them as they are accountable to the State of Texas and the US Fish and Wildlife for my actions.
This is an exceptional organization doing awesome work on the great wild raptors.
Blackland Prairie Raptor Center is dedicated to environmental preservation through public education and the conservation of birds of prey and wildlife in their natural habitat.
Named after the tallgrass prairie that once covered more than 23,500 square miles of Texas from the Red River to San Antonio, Blackland Prairie Raptor Center is a rehabilitation and conservation education organization, specializing in fostering better public understanding of the relationship between birds of prey and healthy ecosystems.
To those of you that have rescued a raptor that was taken to Blackland, you can follow the birds progress on the website bpraptorcenter.org. On the Rescue pull down tab, find RescuMed. There all the birds are listed with all the specific care and the outcome.
