I am still getting calls about small songbirds that won’t fly, and people finding dead birds in their yards. This week I talked with a distraught gentleman because he had a family of House Wrens in a bird house on his porch. The chicks had hatched two or three weeks ago and the chicks were active. Then the parents disappeared. Two days went by and one parent returned and fed the chicks, then left. Two days later the chicks were dead. It’s only supposition but if the parent ate contaminated birdseed and then fed it to their chicks, they were all poisoned by salmonella in the feeder.
The residents of an apartment complex put bird seed out on the ground for the ducks on the communal pond. They enjoy all the little wild birds that come to the seed. Five ducklings at some of that seed too. They all died.
The freeze did not kill the salmonella. It is still out there. Please empty your bird feeders and clean them. Remember that this is the bug that gives humans Food Poisoning.
