Training 101

As part of the rescue, 2 weeks ago, we acquired a 15 year old female hyacinth macaw. She was tested and found healthy by the two vets from Family Pat Care that came here. But she is frightened and not trusting.

So the solution was to bring in a professional trainer. Wendy Craig from Wendysparrots.com, is a professional trainer, former macaw breeder, and uses the most gentle approach. She is coming to the Sanctuary almost every day to draw Lani the hyacinth, out of her fears. Our goal is for Lani to be an ambassador for Bird Tails and for other endangered birds around the world.

We are working on socializing, stepping up on anyone, waving hello and saying Thank you. When we have her trust and she is well socialized, we will begin free flying. It is an awesome site to see a beautiful royal blue bird with a five foot wing span, sore free in the air and land on your arm.

Lani is young, by macaw standards, and we are optimistic that we will be successful. I am taking photos to show the progress Wendy has made in a relatively short time.
