This is day three of quarantine for the birds that were brought to the Sanctuary from Mondays Rescue effort. They are in clean cages, watered, fed, in a separate building from the rest of our flock, with soft natural light and classical music. They have been in absolute filth and total darkness for so long that we must be very considerate of the eyes and not flood them with light. They have been hiding in the backs of cages, from roaches and rodents, so an open active environment of our quarantine building is very stressful. As I washed the floor yesterday, many panicked, screamed and flapped around in their cages. Human contact will be absolutely restricted while we are in strict quarantine. Once the vet has been here, drawn blood and assessed their physical condition, we will have a better understanding of what we are dealing with. Praying the blood test all come back clean, we will then be able to clean the birds up and open them to more interaction with the volunteers. Even though they need to be bathed, nails and beaks trimmed it is too stressful, right now, to do any of that.
I have contacted the nutritionist at a Texas zoo, to recommend proper recovery diet. I use cold, juicy, grapes, instead of water for transport, and they were terrified of the grapes. Many have probably never seen them before.
We need help, first, Pray the birds are not sick and that we can treat them all. Pray we do not cross contaminate to our healthy residential birds.
Second, we need donations to pay for the lab work, medication and supplies needed to care for these birds.
I will attach a photo of a female Eclectus. It is not a washed out photo, her colors are faded from being in the dark.
