Snowball Returns

Mrs. Gibson,

This letter is from a young man that wanted a large cockatoo for his first bird pet. This is the result after just a few days. This is also an example of why fostering is such a great benefit in determining compatibility of bird and human.

Mrs. Gibson,
All praise to God, everything is well for the most part but its been a very tough few days. Ever since bringing home Snowball it has been very difficult to calm him down. We did alot of research and can’t understand where his aggressiveness is stirring up from. The first night we brought him we took him out of the cage and he began to bite whoever handled him. At first we believed it might have been just the pressure of the move and change in environment so we struggled but finally put him back into the cage and put that into our guest room, so he would get a dark room without any noise to sleep in.

The next day we took him out of the cage and the behavior didn’t change. Snowball bit me and my cousins all over our arms, ears and neck. I feel so bad for him! I don’t think he feels happy away from his friend and is going through stress being away or something. :(… unfortunately during this rage my father had come into the room and was bitten viciously. (he has bruises all over his arms) My father wanted us to return it that day but I told him to give it a few more days to try to use positive reinforcements to limit his biting. We kept him out for most of Thursday till around 7 and put him back into his cage and back into the guest room to sleep.

Friday at around 2pm I tried giving it another go and took him out again. It gave gave me this shriek to stay away from him but I tried handling him anyway which came to be a bad idea :(. after trying to use the technique that you had shown me to keep the beak closed i was able to handle him well for quite some time until my father came home again. I believe he has a hatred towards my father and when he came close to me the bird shrieked and bite him again. My father said i have to return him as soon as possible. I have no fear of Snowball and know that he is doing things because of his animal nature but its hard to explain that to my parents.

Would it be possible to bring Snowball back tomorrow? I am extremely sorry for this situation and really believe that more time with Snowball would have solved the issue but my parents are really upset at this point.

I will not be able to make it tomorrow because I feel embarrassed for the most part for gaining your trust and not being able to live up to it and also because of a prior commitment to be somewhere. I hope you forgive me!

God willing i will come to visit Snowball and the other birds soon.

Thank you so much for this learning experience Mrs. Gibson and ill see you soon.
